Born in 1927 as the third son of Tokuro Kato.
It is said that there were three periods in his life: his youth when he was active at events such as the Nitten Exhibition, the period when he focused on being Tokuro's assistant, and the period when he moved his presentation to solo exhibitions.
There is an anecdote that when the Spanish painter Joan Miro visited Karakuro, he was more interested in Shigetaka's work than Karakuro's, and highly praised his talent.
