Lacquer art is the art of creating works by applying the sap from the lacquer tree onto the surface of the vessel and drawing patterns on it.
Distinctive lacquer art works have been produced mainly in Asian countries.
Even within Japan, unique works have been created depending on the region.
The lacquer art shown in the photo is a technique called carving lacquer, which is a technique often used mainly in the Sanuki region. The lacquer is applied in many layers and then carved. As you carve, different layers emerge, creating the pattern shown in the work above.
