金工とは金、銀、鉄、銅、錫などの金属で作られた作品の総称です。

日本では刀剣などを作る高度な技術が発達していましたが廃刀令の発令や時代の移り変わりとともに需要がなくなったため、その技術を生かして外貨を獲得しようと花瓶や置物などを作るように政府が奨励していました。
