漆芸/lacquer

漆芸とは、漆の木から出る樹液を器の表面に塗ったり模様を描いて作品をつくる技術のことをいいます。
主にアジアの国々で特徴のある漆芸の作品が生み出されてきました。
日本国内でも地方によって特徴のある作品が作られてきました。
写真の漆芸は彫漆という技法で、主に讃岐地方でよく使われてきた技法です。漆を何層にも塗り上げその後彫ります。彫っていくと違う層が表れて上の作品のような模様が生まれるのです。

Lacquer art refers to the technique of creating works of art by applying the sap from the lacquer tree to the surface of a vessel or by drawing patterns on it.
Distinctive lacquerware has been produced mainly in Asian countries.
In Japan, different regions have also produced distinctive works of lacquerware.
The lacquerware shown in the photograph is carved lacquer, a technique often used mainly in the Sanuki region.
The lacquer is applied in layers and then carved. As the lacquer is carved, different layers are revealed to create the pattern shown in the work above.
